Quark Expeditions is deeply saddened by a tragedy, which occurred on the Sea Spirit during an Arctic expedition on Monday morning, June 17. Our thoughts are with the three passengers involved in this incident and with their families, all of whom have been contacted.

Quark Expeditions Inc. regrets to confirm that an accident occurred during a Zodiac sightseeing excursion near the 14th of July Glacier, just outside of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, at approximately 11:00 AM local time on Monday, 17 June 2013. A Zodiac carrying 12 passengers capsized, resulting in the fatality of one passenger and the injury of two other passengers. The injured passengers were not critical, received medical care in Longyearbyen, and have since been released from the hospital. Relatives of all affected parties have been contacted. Quark worked with the passengers’ travel agents in arranging for their return home.
Quark Expeditions continues to do everything possible to assist those involved and coordinate with local authorities during this difficult time. The ship, Sea Spirit, has undergone a full investigation in Ny Alesund, Svalbard, Norway, and has been released to continue the rest of the expedition.
While the official investigation report is still pending, preliminary reports submitted by passengers and staff who witnessed the accident consistently site the emergence of a sudden wave that overturned the Zodiac.
